This really comes down to your preferences, budget and priorities.

The Bowflex Max Trainer M5 is the most popular model in the lineup and was really the model that launched the Max Trainer into the popularity it enjoys today.
So is the M5 Max Trainer worth the extra money? Let’s look at what it gives you over the M3 model to help you answer that question.
Bowflex Max Trainer M3 vs M5- Console
This is where you see a huge difference between the two trainers. The M3 Max console – seen below – still has the target zone and burn rate meter that sets the Max Trainer apart from standard elliptical trainers.
The main drawback is that it’s not backlit. So if lighting is limited in your workout area, you may find yourself straining to see your workout stats.
The Max Trainer M5 in contrast does have a backlit console, which you can see below. This makes it much easier to see your workout stats as you exercise, without straining your eyes.
You’ll also notice that the M5 has power-resistance buttons on the console, whereas the M3 does not. You have to change it with the resistance controls on the handrails.
Max Trainer M3 vs M5 – Resistance Levels
The Bowflex M3 gives you 8 levels of resistance. This isn’t bad and should be fine for those new to exercising or just starting out.
But the M5 model gives you DOUBLE the resistance – 16 levels. This gives you a lot more room to grow. And you will appreciate these extra levels as your fitness improves over time.
Bowflex M3 vs M5 – Workout Programs
The M3 does come with the famous 14 minute Bowflex High Intensity workout which was designed to help you get maximum results in minimum time. There’s also a manual mode you can use. However that’s about it.
The M5 gives you extra workout programs – 8 different workout programs to be exact (vs 2 on the Max Trainer M3). So you get programs like Max Interval, Smart Max Interval, Calorie Burn, Fat Burn, Calorie Goal, Stairs, Steady State, Fitness Test + manual mode.
This gives you more options to crosstrain and challenge yourself.
Bowflex Max M3 vs M5 – Online Tracking
Speaking of ways to challenge yourself, a lot of people today like to use online tracking options like fitbit or myfitnesspal to track their workouts. It’s a great way to motivate yourself and actually go further to achieve more.
The M5 makes this easy with the Bluetooth tracking option. You can easily graph and sync your workouts with the free Bowflex App (see above) or with other programs like myfitnesspal or Googlefit.
The M3 doesn’t come with the Bluetooth or any online tracking option.
Bowflex Max Trainer M3 vs M5 – Upgraded Handlebars
The handlebars on the Bowflex Max Trainer M5 are a bit more sleek and cushioned than the M3 handlebars. This gives you an overall more comfortable upper body workout, especially over longer periods of time.
Bowflex Max M3 vs M5 – Heart Rate
A lot of people like to track their heart rate levels to make sure they’re working in their target fat-burning zone. The M3 only gives you one way to do this – with a wireless chest strap.
The M5 gives you the wireless chest strap option – as well as EKG hand grips in front of the console. So you have a bit more flexibility here.
Bowflex Max Trainer M3 vs M5 – Warranty
The Max Trainer M5 also gives you a bit more warranty protection vs the M3 model: 2 years vs 1 year. So you have a bit more protection on your investment.
Bowflex M3 vs M5 Max – Upgraded Pedals
The Bowflex M5 also gives you slightly nicer footpedals with a bit better traction than the Bowflex M3 trainer – which you can see in the pics below and above.
So Which is Best For You?
So those are the main differences between the Bowflex Max Trainer M3 vs M5. Which is best?
Well, the M5 does give you the easier-to-read backlit console. And that will make a difference if lighting is not the best in your workout room at home.
Also, it gives you double the resistance levels, which can also make a huge difference as your fitness levels get better and better over time as you have more room to grow.
However on the other hand the M3 model is about $600 less. And the M3 does have the 14 minute workout that is all you really need to get the amazing calorie-burning results for up to 48 hours after a workout.
So both models have their strong points. It really comes down to what you want to spend and what you feel you need in a trainer.
Still, you really can’t go too far wrong with either one.
